26th - Stride Ahead: Business Planning for Success
It's been said, and rightfully so, that the success of an entrepreneurial venture starts with the right choice of business. A few years ago Kent Fleischmann and Don Poffenroth were fly fishing. Standing knee deep in the Gallatin River they decided to escape the corporate world and live their dream by opening a craft distillery.

With only around 100 distilleries in domestic production, Don and Kent saw an opportunity in a niche market. The two spent eighteen months in the business planning stage before starting production. Both were trained in distillery operation by Christian Carl Distilleries in Germany and studied with a Professor of agricultural and chemical engineering from Michigan State. Not only did they go back to school, but they took that time to develop and position their product in their market, and aligned themselves with local Washington grain growers - 99% of their ingredients come from Washington.

In October of 2007, Dry Fly Distilling, Inc., the first grain distillery in Washington State since Prohibition, began producing vodka, gin, and whiskey.

Join us February 26, 2010 at Northern Lights and Dry Fly for great connections and information. Don Poffenroth, owner of Dry Fly, will discuss how strategic business planning positioned Dry Fly for success.

With A'isha Azar
Beyond Fundamentals
Once a dancer of any genre related to the Middle East has a strong foundation in the dance, it is relatively easy to add complexity in order to enhance the basic movement vocabulary of the dance. This class will explore ways to provide texture and variety tofundamental concepts, variations, layering and phrasing, using two movement families.
Trochanter based movement- Also called “hip lift, Basic Egyptian”, etc, this movement has many variations and can be easily layered. A’isha talk about how often movement creates an “illusion” and will introduce to the class seldom seen variations and layers that give the dancer a unique look.
Shimmies- Shimmy is considered the perfect layering element for belly dance. A’isha will break down several different variations for shimmy and teach techniques for layering this versatile movement.
We will explore the fundamental concepts in these two movement families and learn how to expand movement vocabulary.

With Shanner from Tangled Roots
Beginning Popping
Popping is a dance style and one of the that came out of Fresno, CA in the 1970s. It is based on the technique of quickly contracting and relaxing muscles to cause a jerk in the dancer's body, referred to as a pop or a hit. This is done continuously to the rhythm of a song in combination with various movements and poses. Popping is also used as an umbrella term to refer to a group of closely related illusionary dance styles and techniques that are often integrated with popping to create a more varied performance

The Spokane NorthWest Bead Society will be hosting its annual Spring Bazaar soon, and we are currently accepting registrations from interested vendors that wish to exhibit their own uniquely created craft items.

This event showcases and supports only local artisans and their handmade works. We do not accept competition from cheap commercially made mass produced items from outside our community.

Not only is this a fun and somewhat rare opportunity for crafters and shoppers alike, this two day event will also feature a bake sale and great drawing giveaways from area businesses. Vendor fees are very reasonably priced, and parking and admission are free for event attendees.

The Spring Bazaar will be held Friday April 30th 12pm-6pm, and Saturday May 1st 10am-6pm in Spokane at PLC Fellowship Hall. The timing of this show provides great shopping opportunities for Mother's Day, as well as a great variety of other unique items.

Available exhibition spaces will be on a first come first served basis, and will also be dependent upon the number of previous registrations for a similar type of craft or art.

Our last event filled up quickly, so don't delay if you would like to have an opportunity to exhibit at this show.

We hope to hear from you soon, and we look forward to you participating with us to showcase your original crafts. If you have any questions or need more information, please contact the SNWBS Events Liaison at vicq@comcast.net.

December 2010

29th - Opening Night "Weaving Our Sisters' Voices" Gonzag
On Friday, January 29th at 6:30pm, Gonzaga University will host a theatre fundraiser for Our Place. It is opening night of, Weaving Our Sisters' Voices, a performance of dance, music and poetry. Tickets are $20. In this awe-inspiring performance, students use story and dance to depict the lives of Vashti, Jochebed, Miriam and 10 other women, named and unnamed, from biblical times. The play explores how these women of scripture's lives relate to our contemporary lives.

Weaving Our Sisters' Voices was created through an artistic collaboration between Gonzaga University professors Linda Schearing and Robert Spittal, and Suzanne Ostersmith. Ostersmith, director and choreographer of Weaving our Sisters' Voices, is director of the dance minor and teaches jazz, dance history and choreography and movement for the performer at Gonzaga. Schearing, who wrote Weaving Our Sisters' Voices, is a professor of Hebrew Scriptures in Gonzaga's religious studies department. She lectures and writes on biblical women and their interpretation and is the co-author and editor of Eve and Adam: Jewish, Christian, and Muslim Readings on Genesis and Gender (Indiana University Press, 1999). Spittal, the production's composer, is a professor in the music department at Gonzaga and is conductor of the university's wind ensemble. Spittal composed the musical soundtracks to the dance-dramas, "The Honorable Urashimo Taro" and "Medieval Mysteries." Spittal was also music director and conductor of the orchestras for the productions, "Pippin" and "Manifest Destiny."

The play will be performed at the Harry and Colleen Magnuson Theatre on the Gonzaga University campus. A silent auction and reception will be held at 6:30pm. Tickets are available by calling 313-6553. Tickets may be purchased with Visa or Master card, check or cash at the Box office.
